Wednesday afternoon after completing our engagement portraits, we drove over to Livonia to meet with Victor (another florist at Westborn) who will be helping out Richard with our wedding. We walked in and saw three mock ups of different size centerpieces, and they turned out beautifully!

The first one is a small centerpiece, filled with more greens:

The second one was another smaller centerpiece, but it was filled with more white flowers. It looked nice, but we both liked the one above with more greens. Our tables are going to be pretty much all ivory, so we liked how the green would make things pop out more.

Last, but not least was the taller centerpiece arrangement:

That thing is huge! It’s taller than us standing next to it. I loved the fact that they are completely all green and white – I didn’t want to incorporate any other colors into our planning other than those two. Keeps it simple, clean, and fresh.

I finally booked our florist – Westborn Flower Market in Livonia. I came to the realization that with no matter who I booked, flowers are going to be expensive, and I might as well go with someone who I like working with and who also knows what they are doing.

My designer is Richard, and he has 37 years of experience in, which makes me believe that he pretty much knows what he’s doing…haha!

I put down a deposit to hold our date and also made an appointment with him for when we go to Michigan in November to see some mock-ups and get more ideas flowing.

Caution: Flower Overload

I went back to Michigan last Thursday, after being up at 5:30am, missing two flights and then driving 5 hours. We had one florist appointment that night with a woman named Megan, who was really sweet. She used to work in a florist shop, and then left and does things directly out of her home. I don’t think I’d be able to find anyone who would be able to beat her pricing, but my only concern was she hasn’t done a lot of weddings, and I wasn’t able to see a wide variety of visual pictures. Also, she only handles the personal things (bouquets, boutonnieres, etc), no reception decor. For that, she gave us the contact information of another woman, Debbie, who she used to work with.

We made an appointment to see Debbie on Friday, and to my surprise she had a bunch of small centerpieces done for a wedding that weekend, so it was nice to see something in person. I absolutely loved it, but now looking at the picture I took of it, I find it too casual for the setting where we are having our reception. Easy fix, considering you just substitute the flowers and such. But like at Megan’s, she didn’t have any visual pictures for me to look at, though she said she would do a mock up high centerpiece so I could see how that looks.

The mock up is going to be done sometime today, and my MOH is going over there to take a picture of it and send it to me. I don’t even know if I want high centerpieces anymore.

By sheer dumb luck got an appointment with Westborn Flowers with Richard, in the branch out in Livonia, after not being able to get an appointment with the one in Dearborn. Richard was absolutely wonderful, and with the numerous years backing him up, he definitely knew what he was talking about. For the first time I could actually see the flowers in person and could start to see how things could be pulled together. The only downside…the pricing.

Why must flowers be so ridiculously expensive?! I never wanted to spend outrageous amounts on flowers, that are going to die and be thrown out anyways. But my creativity is next to nothing when it comes to trying to think up of different things to do for centerpieces.

At this point my brain is mushed with an overload of flowers and different ideas floating in and out. Do I go with two different people who doesn’t have a ton of experience, but is definitely less expensive? Or do I go with someone who has over 20 years of experience who I know would do a wonderful job?

At this point in time, I don’t even want to look at flowers or arrangements. I continuously change my mind and what I seem to love and want, that I don’t know what to do anymore.

I’m writing this from my phone so I don’t know how it will actually turn out via online, but I just wanted to do a mini update.

I’m currently in Michigan, one block away from my old house. It’s weird being so close to ‘home’ yet I can’t go in.

Visited with two florists so far, both have blown me away with their prices, which I highly doubt I’ll find anyone else beat theirs. I wish they had more pictures of what they’ve done, but one is going to make up a sample so we can see what it looks like in person.

Tomorrow I have another appointment with a third florist, and we have a fourth appointment next week…just don’t know I’ll actually make it to that one or not.

I’m trying to see if I can catch a flight to Atlanta on Sunday to go down and see my parents for a few days. But after missing two flights from Cincinnati to Detroit, the whole flying standby worries me that I might not be able to make it down. But we shall see!

I promise a real, and more detailed update once I have Internet access!

I’m heading homeĀ back to Michigan two weekends from now to get some appointments in. One of my next vendors that I would like to figure out is our florist. In one of my previous posts I mentioned how I know nothing about flowers, and even more clueless on how much flowers should cost.

Through some Google searches I’ve found a couple of florists, but the main issue is that a lot of them are a bit far from our venues and I know delivery costs will start to add up.

I’ve been in email contact with Heidi a bit and she said I could make an appointment with her at any time I come back to Michigan. One of my bridesmaids is looking into making an appointment with one of her older sister’s friends, Megan, who is a florist (and who also did her sister’s wedding). Lastly, I think I’m going to make an appointment with Westborn Market. There’s one literally right down the street from where our reception is being held, so delivery would be extremely easy.

As evident of the pictures of both the centerpieces and bouquets, I’m definitely leaning towards the green/white theme to add into the flowers. The fiance and I have discussed things about the centerpieces and we might go the route of some tall and some low, but that’ll depend on pricing. I would also like to add some mood lighting by having candles on the table too, but we’ll see what the florists say when I go and talk with them!

To be honest, I don’t know much about flowers or floral arrangements or the technical name for many of the flowers I see. I just know what I like and what looks pretty to me. Looking for a florist for our wedding is like looking for a needle in the haystack…I seriously don’t know where to even begin to look or what the price ranges are for things.

There’s a popular event group in Michigan called Emerald City Designs. In every event, wedding, design magazine you are sure to catch a glimpse of their advertisement. Honestly, from their pictures they do some phenomenal work, and so I thought I start inquiring about them.

This morning I received a follow up call from one of their associates, and the first question out of my mouth was what their starting price was. The minimum has to be $3,000. What?! Three THOUSAND dollars for flowers that will die and be thrown away. I politely finished my conversation and hung up with her and crossed that off my list.

So the search for a fantastic, but decently priced florist continues.
